And to celebrate, I\u2019m letting my little ones \"repot mandrakes\"...<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever since we read the first book of Harry Potters, my kids \u2013 unsurprisingly \u2013 have been completely enchanted by the magical world of the young wizard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After dressing up as \u201cHermione Granger\u201d for Halloween, it was only a matter of time before our first Harry Potter birthday party came around. And now the time has come: my little one wished for a Harry Potter-themed birthday! Once it was clear that she didn\u2019t want to serve her guests Harry Potter cupcakes (<a href=\"https:\/\/backenmitminis.de\/en\/2024\/02\/16\/harry-potter-schokomuffins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we made those for the school carnival<\/a>), but rather a cake, we knew it had to be a Mandrake Cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mandrake Cake, along with various other Harry Potter party snacks, made a magical centerpiece on the birthday table for my little one\u2019s Harry Potter party! Potter birthday cake, we need a rich, moist chocolate base and some adorable little mandrakes.\nYou can shape the mandrakes 1\u20132 days in advance. If you do, I recommend sealing them airtight in plastic wrap or a sealed container. Only add the green \"hair\" \u2013 the parsley \u2013 on the day you serve the cake, to keep it fresh and perky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alraunen_modellieren\"><\/span>How to shape the mandrakes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To model the mandrakes, I used two soft caramel candies per mandrake. They need to be kept cool as long as possible, since they soften easily at room temperature.\nBut the good thing is: most kids love the taste.\nYou could also use fondant, which holds its shape better \u2013 but in my experience, kids aren\u2019t always fans of the taste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knead two soft caramels together to form a smooth ball. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roll the ball into a small log and pinch one end into a point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With a sharp knife, cut out little arms and legs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carefully shape them with your fingers so they become a bit longer and rounded. Use a wooden skewer to press in: Eye, a mouth, a little hole on top of the head (I even gave mine a belly button \u2013 just for fun \ud83d\ude09)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, right before placing the mandrakes on the cake, stick a parsley leaf into the hole on top of the head \u2013 and voil\u00e0: your magical mandrake is ready!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, preheat your oven to 175\u00b0C (top and bottom heat \/ 350\u00b0F).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using a hand mixer, cream the butter until light and fluffy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the sugar and keep mixing until it has dissolved well into the butter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, add the eggs one at a time, mixing each one thoroughly into the butter-sugar mixture. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the next step, add the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and salt to the batter and mix until combined. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, pour in the milk and chocolate shavings, and mix everything into a smooth batter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour the batter into your parchment-lined baking tin. id=\"Aus_unserem_Schokokuchen_wird_ein_%E2%80%9EAlraunenkuchen%E2%80%9C\"><\/span>From Chocolate Cake to Mandrake Cake<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For our Harry Potter birthday cake, the chocolate cake becomes a flower bed for the mandrakes! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To make the cake look like a flowerbed, I trimmed about 1 cm off the top and sides of the cake and crumbled those pieces into \u201csoil.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the next step, I used a piping tip to twist little holes into the cake, one for each mandrake.\nThe cake crumbs from these holes were also saved to use as additional \u201csoil.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now you can plant the mandrakes into the holes, and then sprinkle the crumbly cake bits all over the top, so it looks like loose garden soil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And there you have it: our magical Mandrake Birthday Cake \u2013 straight out of the Hogwarts greenhouse!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure
