Absolutely!\n\nIf Greece makes you think of island hopping, turquoise-blue water and relaxing beach vacations, you\u2019re probably not alone. For a long time, I associated Greece mainly with its beautiful islands, too \u2013 until we packed up our two Minis, rented a car and spent two weeks exploring the country on an unforgettable road trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what can I say? A road trip through Greece with kids is absolutely worth it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Athens, charming little harbor towns, ancient sites, the beautiful Peloponnese, mountain villages, spectacular coastal roads and finally the breathtaking Meteora monasteries \u2013 our trip couldn\u2019t have been more varied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the way, our road trip somehow turned into a little bit of \u201cmountain hopping\u201d: almost every stop rewarded us with another incredible view. Some were simply beautiful, others absolutely breathtaking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add two toddlers, a rental car and plenty of Cappuccino Freddo, and you have our perfect family road trip through Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unsere_Griechenland_Rundreise_mit_Kindern_auf_einen_Blick\"><\/span>Our Greece Road Trip with Kids at a Glance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of two weeks, our route took us right across Greece:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Athens \u2192 Epidaurus \u2192 Nafplio \u2192 Monemvasia \u2192 Mystras \u2192 Olympia\/Platanos \u2192 Delphi \u2192 Volos \u2192 Kalambaka\/Meteora \u2192 Thessaloniki<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing we particularly liked about this route with young children was that the individual driving stages were very manageable. Most of the time, we spent around two to three hours in the car, which meant we could often time the drives perfectly with our Minis\u2019 afternoon naps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the scenery seemed to change constantly. One moment we were standing among ancient ruins, a little later we were driving along the sea, and the next day we were looking down over Greece from a mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you\u2019re considering a Greece road trip with kids, here we go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Athen_mit_Kindern_%E2%80%93_hier_startet_unser_Griechenland_Roadtrip\"><\/span>1. Athens with Kids \u2013 Where Our Greece Road Trip Begins<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our adventure begins in Athens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, no <a href=\"https:\/\/backenmitminis.de\/en\/2018\/05\/23\/mit-kleinkind-auf-die-akropolis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visit to the Greek capital<\/a> would be complete without a trip to the Acropolis. Climbing up with two small children is definitely a bit of a challenge, but for us it was absolutely worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the Acropolis, we discovered another viewpoint in Athens that we loved: Mount Lycabettus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don\u2019t fancy tackling all those steps with children, you can take the funicular instead. Epidaurus and Nafplio \u2013 Ancient Greece Meets a Charming Harbor Town<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Athens, we buckle our two girls into their car seats and finally set off on our actual Greece road trip with kids, heading towards the Peloponnese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our first stop is the ancient theater of Epidaurus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t even want to say too much about it. Just this: when you stand at the very top of the theater and look down over the ancient structure and surrounding landscape, you feel as though you\u2019ve entered another world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when an Italian woman suddenly begins softly singing opera from the center of the theater far below, you experience one of those travel moments you probably never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that wonderful feeling still with us, we continue on to Nafplio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"attachment_6203\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/backenmitminis.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Roadtrip-Griechenland-Berghopping-Griechenland-Reisen-mit-Kindern-41-Kopie-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Unser Roadtrip durch Griechenland geht weiter durch Nafplio. Our youngest, however, quickly decides what our real destination should be: the playground right by the sea!\n\nWhile our Minis enjoy the swings, the Spaniard and I enjoy coffee and the sea breeze.\n\nSometimes, family vacations really can be that simple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palamidi Fortress undoubtedly offers another fantastic view over Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf. But we decide to skip the climb. The time of day and our children make one thing pretty clear: food is the better idea right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have to get your priorities right, after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Monemvasia_mit_Kindern_%E2%80%93_eines_unserer_Highlights\"><\/span>3. Monemvasia with Kids \u2013 One of Our Favorite Stops<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the Spaniard\u2019s Greek colleagues had strongly recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.griechenland.de\/monemvasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that we make a quick detour to\u00a0<em>Monemvasia<\/em>\u00a0during our road trip through Greece.<\/a>What can I say?\n\nThank you, dear, dear colleague!\n\nThe Spaniard and I unanimously agree \u2013 and believe me, that means something \u2013 that this is one place you really shouldn\u2019t miss when traveling through the\u00a0<em>Peloponnese<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.\n\nEven our heavenly lunch at Scorpios deserves a perfect ten. The family running the restaurant is incredibly welcoming, our children are genuinely made to feel at home, and not only is the food delicious, but the view from the lilac-colored wooden tables towards the fortress is simply dreamy.\n\nI feel as though I\u2019ve stepped straight into one of those impossibly beautiful postcards.\n\nEven thinking about it now makes me sigh contentedly.\n\nSitting there with a Greek salad in front of me and turquoise water in the distance, I already know: this is going to be one of the highlights of our trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"attachment_6194\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"734\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/backenmitminis.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Roadtrip-Griechenland-Berghopping-Griechenland-Reisen-mit-Kindern-32-Kopie-e1652218098884-734x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Unser n\u00e4chster Stop auf unserem Roadtrip durch Griechenland ist Monemvasia. Simply gorgeous!\n\nIt\u2019s the perfect place to relax after wandering around the fortress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we stroll through its narrow streets, we discover lots of charming little highlights. Our youngest would probably say the adorable cats were the best part.\n\nFor me, it\u2019s a tiny caf\u00e9 with simple wooden chairs beneath a shady little tree, just before the lighthouse.\n\nAnd this is where my exciting love affair with Cappuccino Freddo begins. Mystras and Olympia with Kids<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our next planned stop is Olympia. If you\u2019re even remotely interested in sports or the Olympic Games, you really can\u2019t simply drive past it.\n\nBut before exploring the stadium of the ancient Olympic Games, we stop in Mystras.\n\nHere, too, there\u2019s an old fortress waiting to be climbed. Delphi with Kids \u2013 Between Mountains and Ancient Greece<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Olympia, we leave the beautiful Peloponnese behind and continue towards Delphi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of our route so far takes us along the coast. The challenge is heightened by the fact that I carry \"Little Mini\" on my back, while \"the Spaniard\" hauls \"Big Mini\" up the mountain\u2014alternating between his shoulders, back, and arms. In fairness, Big Mini manages a good portion of the climb on her own, but eventually, it gets a bit too steep for her in the heat\u2014and being carried in Papa\u2019s arms is certainly much more comfortable! The view that opens up before us\u2014stretching all the way to the famous ruins of Delphi\u2014makes every single drop of sweat worth it! We don't have to tackle anything that can't be set right with a cool bottle of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Volos_mit_Kindern_%E2%80%93_Zeit_fur_eine_kleine_Pause\"><\/span>6. Volos with Kids \u2013 Time for a Little Break<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After our sweaty climb, we first treat ourselves to a delicious lunch \u2013 with a view again, of course \u2013 before driving towards Volos. However, our destination for the day is not the port city itself, but a hotel in a nearby mountain village. With a pool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And after the past few days, at least the Spaniard and I feel a rather urgent need for some full-body refreshment. Our older Mini, of course, doesn\u2019t need a reason for that. After all, swimming is always a good idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next morning, after a leisurely breakfast, we drive to Volos and explore the harbor. Meteora with Kids \u2013 the Highlight of Our Greece Road Trip with Kids<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were planning our route at home, one thing was already clear to me: We have to go to Kalambaka to see the Meteora monasteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If necessary, I would rearrange our entire route for it. Fortunately, everything fits together wonderfully. As soon as we drive into Kalambaka, the enormous rocks rise up in front of us. We can also see the rock formations from our hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m as excited as a little child. And then our little Mini wakes me up at 5:45 the next morning. Just in time for sunrise! While some can be reached via a small bridge, others are reached by uneven stairs overlooking deep abysses. For a moment, we hesitate and wonder whether we really want to attempt the climb with two toddlers and a Spaniard with a slight fear of heights\u2026\n\nWe grab the adventure by the horns and off we go\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luxify.de\/meteora-auf-den-spuren-von-james-bond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Of course we do it! Like James Bond! Some of the monasteries are built to fit the rocks so precisely that there are frightening drops on either side.\n\nWhat an incredible sight!\n\nNo wonder these monasteries are known as the \u201cfloating\u201d monasteries. I can easily imagine how they appear to float when the clouds hang lower or mist moves through the valley\u2026 Wonderful!\n\nAt one monastery, we see the \u201cold\u201d way up\u2026 Just the thought of having to climb up that way makes my stomach turn and suddenly makes me feel quite different!\n\nThe \u201cnew\u201d climb already puts your nerves to the test a little, but the \u201cold\u201d one\u2026 unthinkable!\n\nI am and remain fascinated!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"attachment_6211\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/backenmitminis.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Roadtrip-Griechenland-Berghopping-Griechenland-Reisen-mit-Kindern-14-Kopie-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Das Highlight unseres Roadtrip durch Griechenland sind die schwebenden Kl\u00f6ster. Thessaloniki with Kids \u2013 the End of Our Greece Road Trip with Kids<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing that the Meteora monasteries, along with Monemvasia, are the highlight of our road trip through Greece, we steer our little rental car towards Thessaloniki.\n\nOf course, the city has a hard time competing with the highlight we have just seen.\n\nNevertheless, the walk along the harbor is lovely (although the whole time I\u2019m secretly fighting my fears \u2013 with no wall or anything similar, I can already see my two girls falling into the restless waters\u2026 Phew!), and we enjoy \u2013 once again \u2013 a Cappuccino Freddo we have grown very fond of up by the fortress.\n\nIt wouldn\u2019t be our mountain-hopping tour through Greece if we didn\u2019t \u2013 once again \u2013 drink it while enjoying a far-reaching view over Thessaloniki and the harbor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not only looking out over Thessaloniki stretching out in front of me, but also looking back on two wonderful weeks with my three favorite people, who have introduced me not only to a wonderful country, but also to a sweet holiday romance \u2013 Cappuccino Freddo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"attachment_6214\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"826\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/backenmitminis.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Roadtrip-Griechenland-Berghopping-Griechenland-Reisen-mit-Kindern-Kopie-e1652218478666-826x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Der letzte Stop auf dem Roadtrip durch Griechenland ist Thessaloniki. For us, it worked surprisingly well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One big advantage of our route was the manageable driving distances. Most of the time, we were on the road for around two to three hours. Especially with toddlers, we were able to time many of these drives around their afternoon nap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, I would always plan a Greece road trip with kids differently from a road trip as a couple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, we deliberately skipped individual sights or climbs when the children were tired or when we simply didn\u2019t feel like doing any more. And that is exactly what I would do again.\n\nNot every sight has to be ticked off the list. Sometimes the playground by the sea is simply the better destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unsere_Tipps_fur_eine_Griechenland_Rundreise_mit_Kindern\"><\/span>Our Tips for a Greece Road Trip with Kids<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back, there are a few things that made our Greece road trip with kids considerably easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nicht_zu_lange_Tagesetappen_planen\"><\/span>Don\u2019t Plan Daily Driving Stages That Are Too Long<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With our Minis, driving times of around two to three hours worked well. Whenever possible, we combined longer drives with their afternoon nap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eine_Kindertrage_mitnehmen\"><\/span>Bring a Child Carrier<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would definitely bring a baby carrier or backpack carrier again when traveling this route with toddlers.\n\nMany of our most beautiful experiences involved climbs, stairs or uneven paths. Especially in Monemvasia, Delphi and Meteora, a stroller isn\u2019t practical everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mut_zur_Plananderung_haben\"><\/span>Have the Courage to Change Your Plans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mystras is a perfect example: We could actually have visited another castle. But we were hungry and the children didn\u2019t feel like another climb.\n\nSo we went out to eat instead.\n\nAnd you know what? That was completely fine.\n\nA road trip with children becomes more relaxing when not every item on the itinerary absolutely has to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unterkunfte_mit_Pool_einplanen\"><\/span>Plan Accommodation with a Pool<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After several days full of sightseeing and excursions, our relaxing afternoon by the pool near Volos was exactly what we needed.\n\nOn a longer road trip with children, I would deliberately plan little breaks like this on hot days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wasser_und_Sonnenschutz_nicht_vergessen\"><\/span>Don\u2019t Forget Water and Sun Protection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our visits to Olympia and Delphi in particular showed us how exhausting sightseeing in warm weather can be with small children.\n\nEnough water and opportunities to take breaks should therefore definitely be part of the day\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unsere_schonsten_Stopps_der_Griechenland_Rundreise_mit_Kindern\"><\/span>Our Favorite Stops on Our Greece Road Trip with Kids<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I look back on our trip today, I find it difficult to name just one favorite place.\n\nMonemvasia completely enchanted me with its little streets, fortress and special atmosphere. Meteora was probably the most spectacular experience of our Greece road trip with kids in terms of scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the little moments are also part of this trip for me: our Minis on a playground right by the sea in Nafplio, meatballs under the table instead of on the plate, a pool after an exhausting day and, of course, my not entirely insignificant love story with Cappuccino Freddo.\n\nIt was exactly this combination that made our road trip so special for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mein_Fazit_Lohnt_sich_eine_Griechenland_Rundreise_mit_Kindern\"><\/span>My Conclusion: Is a Greece Road Trip with Kids Worth It?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, the answer is very clear: Yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greece surprised us with its incredible variety. During our two-week road trip, we experienced big cities, small harbor towns, ancient sites, mountains, the sea and some truly spectacular landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And our route worked wonderfully for us even with two small children.\n\nOf course, we travel differently with Minis. We might climb one mountain less, but instead suddenly spend an hour at a playground by the sea. We admire historical sites while at the same time knowing pretty much exactly where the nearest shady spot is.\n\nBut perhaps it is precisely these unplanned moments that make a road trip through Greece with kids so special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I can only encourage families who are still considering it to discover Greece beyond the classic beach vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while you\u2019re there, definitely try a Cappuccino Freddo.
