For Halloween, there is a special edition of the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge: Halloween Snacks – Mini Bundt Cakes topped with cute, handmade Monster Cake Toppers.
Bake Your Favorite Book – The Baking Challenge for Minis
Half a year ago, we baked and crafted for the first time for the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge. Now, in October, the baking challenge is already in its 6th round. Plenty of reason Special to organize a special edition of the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge!
What is the “Bake Your Favorite Book” Challenge
Simply put, the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge is a baking challenge for the whole family. But it’s not just about baking and books! No, it’s about much more! It’s about parents and children spending time together, discovering wonderful children’s books, and engaging with them.
Because just like baking together with your child, reading “together” or reading aloud promotes your child’s development on a variety of levels. That’s why I combined these two wonderful activities into the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge.

The idea for the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge was born in April 2020 on the occasion of International Children’s Book Day. Various favorite books of the little ones were interpreted by young bakers and sweet-tooth enthusiasts through cakes, cookies, and other treats.
Since the idea was well received by many cake lovers and bookworms, we have been baking every month based on a specific book and theme! This way, we discover new children’s books each month and can creatively bake with our children, then enjoy a homemade treat while reading a favorite book.

Kid's book presentation
For the Halloween Special , the shark-blue monster “Schlinkepütz” serves as the mascot.
The stories of this little monster, made popular by the children’s magazine Gecko, are creative and funny. My minis are fascinated by Schlinkepütz because it experiences familiar everyday situations with many absurd, monster-like details. Wonderful! For example, Schlinkepütz sometimes brushes a few teeth or constantly arrives late – not very monster-like.

The book Schlinkepütz – the Monster Who’s Late is one of the books that will be raffled off among all participants of the October “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge.

Recipe for Mini Bundt Cakes with Pumpkin Puree
This recipe for Halloween snacks – or mini pumpkin cakes – is perfect for baking with children: simple yet with enough steps for even the smallest helpers to assist. Only be cautious when cooking the pumpkin. You can prepare this step in advance if you prefer not to work with your minis at the stove. For school-age children, you can consider letting them cook the pumpkin under supervision. Remember: nothing ventured, nothing gained! 😉

Preparation
We use pumpkin puree for this simple pumpkin cake. Making the puree takes about 10 minutes and can be prepared a day in advance.
Baking Mini Bundt Cakes
Wash and deseed the pumpkin, cut into approx. 2 x 2 cm cubes. Place pumpkin cubes in a saucepan with some water and cook for 10 minutes until soft. Drain and let them briefly dry.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) top/bottom heat. In a separate bowl, puree the pumpkin with margarine.
Your mini can crack the eggs into the mixing bowl. Beat with sugar and vanilla paste until frothy. Mix baking powder with flour, sift into the egg-sugar mixture, and fold gently. Stir in pumpkin puree.
Using a teaspoon, fill the mini bundt silicone mold (don’t grease – just rinse with cold water).Mini tip: Silicone baking molds are usually only greased before the first use, otherwise the pores of the non-stick layer will become “clogged”)
Now bake the mini Bundt cakes in the oven for 12-15 minutes. To ensure our Halloween snacks are truly baked, please use the toothpick test to check they're done.
Once the mini Halloween snacks are fully baked, place them in the silicone baking pan on the cooling rack with the opening facing up. Only remove the mini Bundt cakes from the pan once both the silicone baking pan and the mini Bundt cakes have completely cooled.
Glaze for Mini Bundt Cakes
To perfectly “trace” the shape of the mini bundt cakes for pretty Halloween snacks with the glaze, here’s a wonderful and simple tip! You and your little one need to pour the melted glaze (in our case, the decorating melts) into the clean mini bundt cake mold—1 to 2 teaspoons of the liquid glaze should be enough per mini bundt cake. Then, press the baked Halloween snacks back into the mold so that the still-liquid glaze clings to the shape of the bundt cake. Place the mold with the glaze and mini bundt cakes in the fridge to dry. Once the glaze has set (after about 20–30 minutes), you and your little one can carefully pop the finished Halloween snacks out of the silicone mold.

For the “marbled effect” of my Halloween snacks, I carefully “added” two of the glaze colors into the mini bundt cake mold using a teaspoon (see picture below). Then I spread the third color, as the “main color,” a little more generously in the mold.

Monster Caketoppers “Happy Monster” for Halloween Snacks
To make these caketoppers for the Halloween snacks suitable for little ones in kindergarten, I deliberately chose simple shapes for the monster caketoppers. If your children are older or very skilled with scissors, there are additional monster caketoppers that require a bit more scissor experience. Hopefully, this way no crafting fan will get bored! 😉
Materials list for 8 monster caketoppers
For 8 monster caketoppers, you will need:
- Construction paper (any colors)
- 8 toothpicks
- Washi tape
- Scissors
- Pencil
- black Edding*
- white Edding* (or white paper for the eyes)
Instructions for monster caketoppers
Print out the DIY template for the “Happy Monster” muffin toppers and cut it out (you can find more templates here)..
Place the stencils on the construction paper of your choice and trace around them with a pencil. Now you or your little one can cut out the outlines of the monsters with scissors.

In the next step, give each “Happy Monster” a face (or transfer the face that is already on the stencil).
Once all the monsters have a face, place them face down on the table and attach a toothpick to each “monster” using decorative washi tape. And just like that, your monster caketoppers for the ultimate Halloween snacks are ready!

Perhaps you’re now inspired to join the Halloween Special of the “Bake Your Favorite Book” Challenge with a spooky treat (or these Halloween snacks).
I wish you and your little ones lots of fun baking your Halloween snacks and look forward to a sweet-and-sour Halloween time with you!
Yours, Lia
