The new Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge is here! Just in time for the theme, we’re baking Halloween Brookies – a fantastic combination of brownies and cookies!
It’s that time again: There’s a new Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge! To celebrate this special event, my minis and I are baking a wildly delicious and chocolatey treat today: Brookies! This is where moist brownies meet crunchy cookies – honestly, what could be more heavenly? (We loooove cookies – especially chocolate chip cookies, but also all the others!!)
But before we share this joy-inducing recipe with you, here’s the info on the Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge for October!
Bake your favorite book – the baking challenge for minis
Autumn has already begun, the weather is getting chillier outside, AND Halloween is just around the corner! The perfect time to start the Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge again!
What is the “Bake your favorite book” challenge
Simply put, the “Bake Your Favorite Book” challenge is an opportunity for your minis and you to discover special children’s books, enjoy delicious cakes, and – most importantly – spend quality time together. Especially now, as it gets colder outside, it also strengthens the bond between the reader and the child when they cuddle up with hot cocoa, tasty treats, and a good book in a cozy corner. But it’s not just about bonding!
Because just like baking together with your child, reading “together” or reading aloud promotes your child’s development on a variety of levels. That’s why I combined these two wonderful activities into the “Bake Your Favorite Book” baking challenge.
Bake Your Favorite Book in October 2021
This October, for my minis and me, there can only be one theme for the Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge: Halloween! So, everything related to spooky, magic, and spider legs can be baked and crafted to participate in the creative challenge!
For this month, I planned something special: To celebrate the spooky day, at the end of the challenge, not only will a themed children’s book be raffled off, but there will also be a spooky surprise box for your Halloween party!
A big thank you goes to Frauke from printfetti.de, who is contributing part of her beautifully spooky Halloween party decorations to our surprise package, and of course to Tulipan Verlag, who supports the Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge with the monstrous sponsor book for the challenge..

As with every Bake Your Favorite Book challenge so far, there is a children’s book that sets the theme for the challenge and acts as its sponsor. The sponsor for October is “Monsta” (by Rita Zipfel and Mateo Dineen, published by Tulipan Verlag).

“Monsta” has moved under a child’s bed specifically to be spooky. But no matter what he does—showing claws, gnawing on the post, making doors squeak—this child just keeps snoring and shows not a hint of fear—in fact, he even grins in his sleep! But Monsta is starting to lose patience!
A delightful book about a small, frustrated monster who’s at the end of his spooky rope... I love the idea that a little frustrated monster writes an indignant letter to his spooky kid. This way, the “monster under the bed” theme is wonderfully portrayed for children from a different perspective—the little frustrated monster’s—and therefore put in a less scary light. I also really like the illustrations in the children’s book “Monsta.” They are funny, appealing, and vividly reflect the little monster’s perspective and emotions.
A very lovely children’s book not just for Halloween!

Preparation
Brookies are made of a moist brownie batter and a crunchy cookie crust. First, you focus on the cookie dough before preparing the brownie batter:
- Start the cookie dough by putting the soft butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beating with a hand mixer until creamy and the sugar dissolves.
- Now stir in the egg.
- Then mix the flour and baking powder and add to the cookie dough, along with the baking-stable chocolate chunks.
- Divide the cookie dough into two portions and color one orange and the other purple. (Disposable gloves are best when kneading in food coloring.)
- While you prepare the brownie batter, chill the two cookie dough balls in the fridge.
Now the brownie batter:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (top and bottom heat).
- Melt the chocolate with butter in a water bath until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Beat the eggs and sugar together for about 5-8 minutes until creamy.
- Carefully fold in the cooled chocolate-butter mixture with a spatula (do not use the mixer from now on to avoid losing air and drying out your brookies).
- Finally, fold in the flour, cocoa, and chocolate spice carefully, just until small flour lumps remain.
Combining Brownie and Cookie Dough:
- Put the brownie batter in the greased pan and distribute the colored cookie dough on top. My minis and I pulled it apart and sprinkled it over the brownie batter. You can also roll out the cookie dough and lay it flat on top as a crust. Finally, sprinkle some chocolate chunks on top of the brownie batter.
- Bake the brookies for about 40 minutes. Use the toothpick test to check doneness since ovens vary.
- Once cooled, decorate your brookies in Halloween style. My minis and I added orange melts and decorated with candy eyes, sugar knives, and orange & purple sprinkles.

And just like that, these insanely delicious and chocolatey brookies are ready to devour! A monstrous Halloween cake for your Halloween party!
I hope your minis and you are now excited to bake for Halloween and participate in the Bake Your Favorite Book Challenge with your Halloween creation!
