This year’s Halloween blog parade with many creative food bloggers is fluttering across the Halloween buffet in the form of a little cake on a stick: our fluttery bat cakesicles with crunchy wings.
Once again this year, my little ones and I have teamed up with some special food bloggers to prepare spooky-delicious recipes for your Halloween cake buffet.
After we’ve already baked crunchy spider cakesicles and spooky brookies (an addictive mix of brownies and cookies) , it’s about time again for a small but tasty bat! (As it happens, last year we also baked a bat cake for the blog parade— BUT of course completely different! 😉)
Here at Baking with kids , as the name suggests, we focus on creative baking with children using simple recipes. That’s why today my minis and I will show you how, in just a few steps, you can turn a cakesicle into a fluttery Halloween cake on a stick: bat cakesicles.

Trick or Treat?
Recipe for Our Bat Cakesicles with Crunchy Wings
You can make bat cakesicles with any sponge cake. We baked a pumpkin cake to match Halloween for our flying treats. The easiest way to grate the pumpkin is with a food processor; if you don’t have one, you can grate it with a regular kitchen grater. You might want to prepare the pumpkin before baking — without your child — to save time.

Ingredients for 8 Bat Cakesicles
Sponge dough
- 100 g grated pumpkin
- 40 g brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla paste
- 80 g spelt flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 50 g ground almonds
- 25 ml milk
- 50 ml sunflower oil
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp pumpkin spice (we use the spice mix from Just Spikes)
Decoration
- Purple melts*
- Candy eyes*
- Mini marshmallows* (for fangs)
- Chocolate décor hearts* (for ears)
- Icing pen* (for the mouth)
- Food glue*
- Halloweentastic sprinkles* (we chose orange, green, and purple)
Baking utensils
Classic silicone cake pop mold*, cake pop sticks*, silicone baking mat* or baking paper, mixing bowls, hand mixer, kitchen grater or food processor, measuring jug, kitchen scale, teaspoon, spatula, cooling rack, saucepan & melting bowl* or tall container (cup or glass), scissors

Preparation of the Bat Cakesicles
Pumpkin cake – the base for the bat cakesicles
- Rinse the silicone mold with cold water.
- Grate the pumpkin.
- Preheat oven to 160°C (top and bottom heat).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients (spelt flour, baking powder, ground almonds, sugar, pumpkin spice).
- In a second mixing bowl, beat the egg until creamy with a mixer, then add all wet ingredients (sunflower oil, milk, vanilla paste) and mix well.
- Add the dry ingredients to the egg-oil-milk mixture and stir into a smooth batter.
- Fold in grated pumpkin.
- Spoon the batter into the cakesicle mold and insert the cakesicle sticks.
- Bake for about 20–22 minutes until done (check with a skewer — if no batter sticks, they’re ready). Please check with a skewer test to see if the cakesicles are baked through. If no batter sticks to the wooden stick, the cakesicles are done!
- Let the cakesicles cool in the mold before carefully removing them.

Decorating the Little Bats
- First, melt the purple melts in a water bath or microwave.
- Since the melts set quickly, I recommend decorating the cakesicles one at a time.
- Dip each cakesicle into the melted coating up to the stick, then let it drip off slightly (tap the stick gently against the container edge).
- Attach the eyes and fangs to the front. For fangs, cut mini marshmallows diagonally with kitchen scissors. Fix the chocolate hearts upside down (point up) as ears on the top of the cakesicle.
- For the “crunchy wings,” spread melted coating on a silicone baking mat or baking paper in bat-wing shapes — we made a strip about 5 cm long and 2 cm wide. Add sprinkles if desired. While still wet, place the cakesicle in the middle of the wings. Once the coating has set, the wings will be attached.
- Draw the bat’s mouth with the icing pen.
