Simple theme cake: basketball cake

Today my little ones and I are baking a delicious basketball cake for the basketball fan in our family! This easy-to-make themed cake is perfect for baking with children and for baking beginners!

Many people - especially occasional bakers who only bake when the next child's birthday is coming up - think that baking a themed cake is the holy grail of baking! But it can be so easy to bake a themed cake for your little ones! Because not every themed cake consists of several cake layers, kilos of buttercream and elaborate fondant works of art. It can be much easier!

My little ones and I love to bake based on themes and for children's birthdays my girls are always allowed to choose a theme for which I bake a suitable birthday cake. And I can promise you, I'm definitely not a fondant pro and I'm always looking for simple but effective ideas for our themed cakes! Like our basketball cake today.

These ideas for themed cakes were similarly simple and effective:

And today we are baking a delicious basketball cake for all basketball fans:

Recipe for our basketball cake

The basketball cake consists of a nutty batter and orange cake melts. Your minis can help you with the classic batter and then brush the cooled cake with orange cake melts. This themed cake is suitable for even the smallest minis. (Have you already seen my blog post "Baking tasks for children aged 2 and over"). Depending on how old your minis are, you may need to take care of melting the melts.

Ingredients

Sponge dough

  • 375 g margarine
  • 6 eggs
  • 280 g sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar (15g)
  • 375 g (spelled) flour
  • 1 packet of baking powder (15 g)
  • 200 g ground hazelnuts
  • 100 g grated dark chocolate
  • 125 ml milk

Decoration

Baking accessories

Kitchen scales, measuring cup, mixing bowl, hand mixer, 26 cm springform pan, baking paper, sharp knife, dinner plate, dough scraper, saucepan and bowl for a water bath, pastry brush, cooling rack, disposable piping bag, scissors

Preparation

Before the basketball cake can be decorated, bake this moist sponge cake with your minis.

We bake a juicy sponge cake

  • First, place the baking paper in the springform pan and preheat the oven to 175°C top/bottom heat.
  • Beat margarine, sugar & vanilla sugar until fluffy and the sugar has dissolved.
  • Add eggs one at a time and stir for 20 seconds each.
  • In the next step, add flour and baking powder to the dough and mix well.
  • Now add the ground hazelnuts, chocolate shavings and milk and mix to form a smooth dough.
  • Die Masse in die vorbereitete Springform füllen und auf die mittlere Stufe in den vorgeheizten Backofen geben.
  • Let the cake bake for about 45-50 minutes. Don’t forget to use a skewer to check if it is cooked, as all ovens bake differently (I once had to bake this cake for 60 minutes in another oven until it was baked through...).
  • Once the cake is baked, let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes and then remove it from the pan. To do this, run a sharp knife between the cake and the edge; this will release the cake from the edge of the springform pan. Then open the edge of the springform pan and remove it from the cake. Now place a plate on the cake and turn it over so that the bottom of the springform pan is on top of the cake. You can now slowly remove this from the cake. Place a round cooling rack on the cake and turn the cake over again so that it is now on the cooling rack and can cool completely.

The foundation for the nutty basketball cake is now created.

Der Rührkuchen wird zum Basketballkuchen

  • While the cake is cooling, you and your minis melt the orange cake melts in a water bath or in the microwave (note the preparation instructions for the melts).
  • Then the visible surface of the sponge cake is coated with the orange cake melts and left to dry.
  • Now the dark chocolate is slowly melted in a water bath and filled into a disposable piping bag, the tip is cut about 0.5 cm with scissors and the orange sponge cake is decorated to look like a basketball. To do this, first draw a cross on the cake with the liquid chocolate and then two "curves" on the horizontal line of the cross (see pictures).

And now you can give a basketball fan a delicious treat with the basketball cake!

I hope I was able to convince you that baking a delicious themed cake is really not rocket science! Maybe my minis and I could inspire you with one of our ideas!

Now my minis and I wish you and your minis lots of fun baking and enjoy the basketball cake!

Yours, Lia
