What Makes a School of Magical Animals Birthday So Special?
A School of Magical Animals children’s birthday combines everything children love: fantasy, animals, adventure, and lots of creativity. Elementary school children between 7 and 10 especially love diving into the world of Winterstein School and are excited about matching games, magical decorations, and animal-themed surprises.
The best thing about this theme: many ideas can easily be homemade. With a little creativity, you can create individual invitations, creative party favors, and funny games that perfectly match the world of Rabbat, Mortimer & Co.
Invitation for the School of Magical Animals Party
Like every year, everything starts with an invitation to the celebration! Together with their “magical animal,” we invited the little guests to the birthday party.
Since my mini invites her friends and should also learn that a children’s birthday party has to be prepared, we always make the invitations together.
This year, we color-printed some covers of the School of Magical Animals books in approximately 4x6 cm format (you can find screenshots online) and turned them into little books. Inside the little books, we wrote the details and information for the School of Magical Animals party.
But there are also really funny templates for animal-themed invitations for a School of Magical Animals party available to buy (in this list you’ll find funny invitations for your School of Magical Animals party*).).

A lovingly designed banderole (if necessary with a preconceived invitation text) for parents with little time!
School of Magical Animals – Make Your Own Decorations
Party decorations are indispensable for our birthdays! Since we’ve always celebrated themed birthdays so far, the decorations especially put us in the right mood!
For the party decorations, I followed the same approach as with all our previous birthdays: the focus is on the table. With themed party plates and matching snacks, you can represent the theme beautifully here! But more on that later!
In addition, the party area (in this case our terrace) is decorated with balloons and garlands. Normally, for our themed children’s birthday parties, I always buy a party decoration set that includes matching paper cups and plates, napkins, garlands & balloons.
However, I couldn’t find a ready-made set for the theme “School of Magical Animals,” which honestly surprised me a lot. Luckily, I found the great downloads for the bunting, figures, and muffin toppers at Leseliebe.de and made our entire party decoration from them.

I glued the muffin toppers onto classic paper cups and then labeled them with names so the children could always find their cup again.
I also decorated simple paper sandwich bags with the muffin toppers, making the party favor bags match our birthday theme.
The paper figures of the main characters from the School of Magical Animals books were placed as funny decorations on the party table.
And apart from that, we happily decorated with lots of balloons, confetti, and the colorful School of Magical Animals party garland.
School of Magical Animals Party Food – Creative Snacks & Cake Ideas
For such a themed birthday, the right party snacks are of course the be-all and end-all! Even more so in the “Backen mit Minis” household.
To match the School of Magical Animals birthday, there was of course an “extraordinary” birthday cake that fit perfectly with School of Magical Animals, plus lots of snacks.
We decided to bake a very special birthday cake for the theme, but if you’re looking for even more inspiration for The School of Magical Animals, I can recommend the cookbook The School of Magical Animals – The Cookbook: Easy to Recreate: The Favorite Recipes of Rabbat, Henrietta & Co.. It contains many delicious & easy recipes for children and is also a wonderful gift for fans of Winterstein School.

Birthday Cake & Muffins
In my opinion, the birthday cake is the centerpiece of the birthday table! But of course delicious muffins are always a huge hit with the minis too.
Mortimer’s Omnibus Pound Cake
This year I once again decided on a birthday cake: in our case, it was Mortimer’s omnibus! The children thought it was super funny and my birthday child was absolutely thrilled.
For the delicious bus cake, I baked a tasty lemon loaf cake and then decorated it with red and yellow cake melts and colorful cocktail flags* .

Fox Cake “Rabbat”
As an alternative to Mortimer’s omnibus, our fox cake is perfect. The delicious cake looks amazingly similar to the fox Rabbat.
Here you’ll find the recipe for the impressive fox cake.

Party Games & Creative Activities for the School of Magical Animals Party
At a children’s birthday party like this, people don’t just eat – they also play a lot. There are thousands of party games, and you probably still remember your favorite games from your own childhood, so here I’ll introduce the games we played at our School of Magical Animals party.
I’d also like to share a thought with you about children’s birthday parties:
There are birthday parties that are planned down to the minute with games and activities. We also have “guided” games and activities. At the same time, I always plan at least one hour where the children can play freely. Chalk, balls, etc. or the children’s rooms are available for playing, and my experience shows that the children really enjoy “simple” games like tag or hide-and-seek. The children enjoy free play with their friends! During that time, I step back or stay in the background (of course the children’s age is important).
Of course, there’s always one or another child who approaches me with great expectations and asks the ultimate question: “What are we doing now? What comes next?” I then answer that they are responsible now and can play whatever they feel like playing, and usually that is completely accepted.
I think what I’m trying to say is: don’t stress yourselves too much, the children are together with their friends – they will have a good time!
Party Games for Your “Winterstein School Class”
For our children’s birthday party, I prepared two games. I organized a photo rally and our birthday classic that has never been missing from any birthday party.
Photo Rally
I found the idea of a photo rally online last year for our Harry Potter party while researching alternatives to a treasure hunt, and what can I say… the minis had so much fun, and afterwards we had really cute and funny pictures from the birthday party. A win-win situation! So I spontaneously created a photo rally for our School of Magical Animals theme. So you don’t have to do the same work, you can download it here for free.
For the photo rally, the participants receive a list of things or situations they have to photograph and about 45–60 minutes of time. With a tablet under their arm, the minis went searching for the photo motifs and really enjoyed it.
Predator Feeding
For this game, I threaded sweets onto a string (apple rings, gummy pacifiers, cherries… anything with a hole is perfect, but anything else also works). You need two people to hold each end of the string, and then one child at a time may grab a sweet with their mouth. Of course, it’s especially funny if the string moves a little and the child has to jump a bit too…

Creative Activity
After the children had strengthened themselves with cake and party snacks and returned from the photo rally, we decorated picture frames. After all, every class – certainly also the one at Winterstein School – needs a funny class photo as a memory of the time spent together!
For this, I bought wooden picture frames and lots of animal-themed glitter stickers. At the birthday party, I also provided colored pencils and felt-tip pens, and everyone could design their own personal wooden frame.
Every picture frame turned into a little work of art! And of course, the children were allowed to take them home afterwards.

Party Favor Bags for the Students of the School of Magical Animals
It is well known that opinions differ on party favor bags.
At least at the children’s birthday parties I’ve experienced, it has become customary for the guests to receive a party favor bag at the end of the party, sometimes filled with so many little items and sweets that, in my opinion, it becomes a little excessive – both in terms of quantity and sugar.
So far, at most birthday parties, we have made something crafty, and the little guests were allowed to take it home afterwards. We still have party favor bags because my children naturally know them from other birthday parties and also want them for their guests. They usually contain 2–3 small sweets and/or a small item such as children’s tattoos, balloons, etc.
For this birthday, we printed out a group photo that was taken during the photo rally and placed it into the frames designed by the children. This way, they had a very special keepsake from this School of Magical Animals party!

My mini and her guests had so much fun at the School of Magical Animals birthday, and I hope that we’ll still be celebrating funny themed parties in the “Backen mit Minis” household for a long time to come.
I hope I was able to give you a few inspirations for your own School of Magical Animals birthday and wish you a wonderful celebration!
Yours, Lia
