Fig and Walnut Tart – Easy Recipe for a Moist Fig Cake

Bake a deliciously moist fig and walnut tart with fresh figs, crunchy walnuts and honey! This easy recipe is perfect for baking with children and makes a wonderful summer cake.

Fresh figs straight from the garden – is there anything better? Yesterday, our neighbour surprised us with a large plate full of sun-ripened, juicy figs. My mini was instantly excited, and together we started thinking about what we could bake with them.

We decided on a simple Fig and Walnut Tart—wonderfully moist, pleasantly sweet, and full of nutty flavour. Best of all, it's quick to make and perfect for baking with children. While little hands stir the batter and arrange the figs on top, you'll create a delicious cake that's perfect for afternoon coffee or a family breakfast.

Recipe for Our Fig and Walnut Tart

If you're looking for an easy recipe using fresh figs, you'll love this tart. The light sponge-style batter pairs beautifully with the naturally sweet, aromatic figs. Crunchy walnuts add texture, while a drizzle of honey brings a subtle caramel flavour. The result is a simple summer cake that tastes just as delicious warm from the oven as it does the next day. This recipe is beginner-friendly and ideal for baking together with children.

Younger children may need a little help slicing the figs and chopping the walnuts. For extra safety, use a child-safe kitchen knife or simply buy pre-chopped walnuts.*

Baking accessories

Mixing bowl, Hand mixer, Kitchen scale, Tablespoon, Teaspoon, Cutting board, Knife, Rubber spatula, Tart pan or a 26 cm (10-inch) springform pan lined with baking paper, Cooling rack, Cake lifter

How to Make the Fig and Walnut Tart

  • Line your baking pan with baking paper or grease it well.
  • Mix the flour and baking powder in a large bowl.
  • Add the sugar.
  • Gradually pour in the milk and sunflower oil while mixing with a hand mixer until you have a smooth batter.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  • Preheat the oven to 200°C top/bottom heat.
  • Sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the figs.
  • Slice the figs into approximately 5 mm (¼-inch) slices and arrange them evenly over the batter.
  • Finally, drizzle about 2 tablespoons of honey over the tart. We dipped a spoon into the honey and moved it in circular motions above the tart to create beautiful honey swirls.
  • Bake the tart for about 30 minutes. Since every oven bakes differently, check for doneness with a skewer inserted into the centre.
  • Carefully remove the finished tart from the pan and allow it to cool on a wire rack.
  • Optional: Before serving, dust the tart with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.

Serving Suggestions

This Fig and Walnut Tart is wonderfully moist all on its own, but it's especially delicious served with:

  • a scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • homemade vanilla sauce
  • Greek yogurt
  • freshly whipped cream

On warm summer days, the tart tastes particularly refreshing when slightly chilled and served with vanilla ice cream or Greek yogurt. If you have a sweet tooth, drizzle a little extra honey over the top before serving.

It also stays wonderfully fresh the next day and makes a perfect cake for lunchboxes, picnics or afternoon snacks.
