What Is a Candy Cake?
If you’re looking for new baking ideas, you’ve probably already come across the term Candy Cake . But what exactly is a Candy Cake?
“Candy” comes from English and means sweets. A Candy Cake is therefore a sweets cake.
Typically, a Candy Cake is a simple cake or plain layer cake that’s lavishly decorated with candy – for example chocolate bars, lollipops, or, as with our cake, lots and lots of gummy candy.
In short: a Candy Cake is a cake that’s decorated with plenty of sweets.

Recipe for Our Candy Cake
A Candy Cake is ideal for baking with kids, because the base is a simple sponge cake. The real fun begins with decorating – and that’s exactly what children love most.

Ingredients for a Candy Cake
- Sponge cake (we baked the recipe for our favorite vanilla Bundt cake , but a moist lemon cake, a yummy Marble Cake or a fluffy chocolate-nut cake are also great for decorating!)
- 100 g chocolate or melts (we used this Vanille-Glasur )
- 1–2 bags of gummy candy of your choice (we used , among others, these mini gummy candies* , because they look especially cute on the cake)
- 1 bag sour gummy bands (these are perfect for fixing onto skewers and using as cake toppers)
- 1 Happy Birthday lollipop (I bought this one at the candy manufactory in Lüneburg )
- 5–7 wooden skewers
- Optional: about 20 cm ribbon for a gummy candy garland
Baking accessories
Saucepan & heatproof bowl for a water bath to melt the glaze, pastry brush (The equipment needed to bake the cake itself can be found in the respective blog post.)

Preparation – Decorating the Candy Cake
Before decorating the cooled cake, first prepare the gummy candy cake toppers and the gummy candy garland.
Gummy Candy Garland
- Thread round gummy candies onto the ribbon (apple rings work great for this).
- Secure both ends to a wooden skewer and the garland is ready.
- If desired, you can attach a message for the birthday child to the garland and decorate the two skewers with gummy candy as well.

Gummy Candy Cake Toppers
- Skewer gummy candies onto about two-thirds of the wooden skewer (sour belts or larger gummy pieces work especially well).
- As a finishing touch, place a particularly pretty gummy candy on the top of the skewer.

Decorating the Candy Cake
- Melt the chocolate and spread it over the sponge cake using a pastry brush.
- Generously distribute the gummy candy over the entire cake.
- Finally, decorate the birthday cake with the edible cake toppers and the gummy candy garland – and your Candy Cake is ready!
