Our cheeky fox cake “Rabbat”

For all “The School for Magical Animals” fans, today we are baking “Rabbat”, Ida’s magical fox – a juicy fox cake made from delicious batter and chocolate icing.

Well, have you already seen the second film adaptation of the "School of Magical Animals" books with your kids in the cinema? My kids are really excited about the imaginative book series and are delighted by the idea of having a magical animal! I can totally understand that! Unfortunately, I can't provide a magical animal... but I can provide a "magical" fox cake! 😉

Speaking of deliciously baked favorite books: In our category “Bake your favorite book” you will find many great books for children and the baked goods that go with them! We look forward to seeing you and your kids next time!

Recipe for our fox cake "Rabbat"

Our fox cake consists of a moist, classic sponge cake with chocolate icing and sweet fondant ears. Since the sponge cake is made from an all-in-one dough, it is not only quick to make, but also child's play!

Ingredients

Sponge dough

  • 200 g margarine
  • 120 g sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar (15g)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 400 g flour
  • 1 packet of baking powder (15 g)
  • 150 ml milk

Decoration

Baking accessories

Kitchen scales, measuring cup, mixing bowl, dough scraper, 26 cm springform pan, cooling rack, cooking pot & melting bowl, baking brush, 2 skewers

Preparation

  • First, preheat the oven to 175°C top/bottom heat.
  • Next, all ingredients for the batter are placed in a mixing bowl and mixed into a smooth dough.
  • Put the dough into a springform pan lined with baking paper and bake for about 45 minutes. (Depending on the oven, the baking time may vary, so please do the “stick test” to check if the bread is done.)
  • After the fox cake is baked through, take it out of the pan and let it cool on the cooling rack.
  • While the cake is cooling, you and your minis form two fox ears out of the fondant. Once the ears are finished, fix the skewers in the fondant (see picture). The ears are then attached to the sponge cake using the skewers.
  • After the sponge cake has cooled, decorate it to look like a fox. To do this, first melt the white icing in a water bath and spread it over the surface of the cake as shown in the picture. Then melt the orange cake icing and decorate the remaining surface with the liquid icing.
  • Before the cake icing sets, attach the fox ears to the sponge cake.
  • When the cake icing has set, use the black sugar pen to paint the fox's eyes and nose.

And “Rabbat” the fox is ready!
