What fits better at a school enrollment party than little school cones? These colorful & simple cone cakes are the highlight of any school enrollment cake buffet.
What is "Bake Your Favorite Book"?
The "Bake Your Favorite Book" challenge was born in April 2020 on the occasion of International Children's Book Day. Young hobby bakers and cake lovers interpreted their favorite children's books through baking. Just like baking together with your child fosters development, reading and storytelling also play a key role in their growth. That’s why I decided to combine both, creating the "Bake Your Favorite Book" baking challenge!
Since the idea has been well received by many baking enthusiasts, every month we bake something inspired by a specific book and theme! This way, we discover beautiful new children's books and can bake creatively with our children before diving into a book together with a homemade treat.
"Bake Your Favorite Book" in August
Since many new schoolchildren in Germany start school in August, and reading books is an essential part of our challenge, the only possible theme for the month was:
"ABC Jungle & Other Adventures Around School Enrollment"
In August, we celebrated many school enrollments with delicious cakes, muffins, and other treats. There were school cones made of sponge cake, fondant, and marzipan—on cakes, in ice cream cones, and even on sticks! Many little first-graders enjoyed special homemade creations made just for their big day. My kids and I also decorated our favorite lemon cake just for the occasion! You can find all these colorful treats on Instagram under the hashtag #backdeinlieblingsbuch.

To celebrate, Kaufmann Verlag supported the challenge by donating a book box for school enrollment—a colorful thank you for this exciting gift!
The read-aloud book "Colorful School Stories" contains exciting tales about starting school, helping first-graders prepare for their big day.
The interactive book invites preschoolers to learn the alphabet in a playful way. With a wipe-clean pen, they can practice writing letters repeatedly for endless fun!

"Bake Your Favorite Book" in September 2020
Of course, our baking challenge continues in September!
As the fall season approaches, we notice the change in the air and at the farmer’s markets. This month’s theme welcomes autumn with:
"Petronella Apfelmus – Apples & Other Autumn Treats"

Would you like to bake along with your kids? Bake something related to the current theme and post your creation using #backdeinlieblingsbuch on Instagram—tag @backenmitminis and join the challenge!

How the Cone Cakes Are Made
Cone cakes can be made in two ways:
- Baking raw batter directly in the oven
- Shaping them from pre-baked cake
I chose the second method because it allows for precise shaping, which is difficult when baking in a regular oven.
In the first step, my kids had a blast crumbling the sponge cake over a mixing bowl 😉 If the batter is moist enough, you can continue working with it. However, if it's too dry, you should stir in a tablespoon of neutral cream cheese or yogurt.
Little tip: If you press the crumbs together and they hold together, the dough is moist enough. If the crumbs fall apart, add some cream cheese or yogurt.
Now fill the cone cakes completely with the cake batter. Finally, form the batter into a half-sphere and press it onto the opening of the ice cream cone. This gives the cone cake a more voluminous appearance.

Once you've filled all the ice cream cones with cake, grab the cone cake holder. If you don't have one, fill a baking pan (e.g., a loaf pan or springform pan) with uncooked rice—this will allow the ice cream cones to "stand" upright on their tips.
Cone cakes become school cones
To turn the cone cakes into a delicious little school cone, press a wafer roll about 4 cm long (shorten it with a knife if necessary) into the center of each cone cake, leaving about 1-1.5 cm of the roll sticking out of the batter. After the cone cake is frosted, tie the rubber bands around this wafer roll.
Now it's time to melt the cake glaze. Dip the cone cakes upside down into the liquid glaze until the rim of the waffle cone is covered. Before placing them in the cone cake holder or a baking pan filled with rice to dry, sprinkle them with the sugar sprinkles of your choice.
Once the cake glaze has dried, tie a small bow around the end of the wafer roll sticking out of the cone cake using the gummy strings. And just like that, they're ready: the cute little school cone cakes, and the school enrollment celebration can begin!

My kids and I wish you lots of fun baking and even more fun snacking together!
Yours, Lia
