Looking for a cute party snack for a dinosaur-themed birthday party? How about these fun dinosaur waffle cups? This quick cake recipe is a delicious highlight for the little ones at a dinosaur party.
5 reasons why you should bake cakes in waffle cups for your child's birthday party
I am a big fan of the cute cakes in waffle cups for children's birthdays (Maybe you still remember our summery waffle cup creation of shake cakes?):
- The waffle cups are baked super quickly.
- You don't need a special baking pan, but you can still decorate with all sorts of motifs.
- The waffle cups are eaten in 2-3 and therefore there are few leftovers
- They can be eaten whole and leave no waste behind.
- The little cakes are perfect to eat with your fingers and are therefore ideal for picnics or on the go.
So that you can see for yourself, here is the easy recipe for our cute dino waffle cups for you and your little ones:
Recipe for our sweet dino waffle cups
You can also bake these little cakes in waffle cups with your little ones. Filling the waffle cups with a teaspoon is a wonderful exercise for fine motor skills. But decorating the little cups is especially fun!

Ingredients for 16 dinosaur waffle cups
Sponge dough
- 75 g margarine
- 30 g sugar
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar (15g)
- 1 egg (M)
- 100 g (spelled) flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch of salt
- 70 g Greek yogurt (10% fat)
- 16 waffle cups
Decoration
- green Cake melts*
- 32 sugar eyes*
- 16 green chocolate pearls
- 48 orange triangle chocolate pearls (I used these triangle chocolate pearls, but you can also use Smarties or the Dull Rods )
- green sugar sprinkles
Baking accessories
Kitchen scales, mixing bowl, hand mixer, teaspoon, baking tray, cooling rack, saucepan & bowl or microwave for a water bath
Preparation
Before we decorate the little dinosaur waffle cups, we first mix together the moist yogurt batter.
Cake filling for the waffle cups
- First, preheat the oven to 180°C top/bottom heat.
- Put the margarine in a mixing bowl and stir it until fluffy.
- Add sugar, vanilla sugar and egg and mix until the sugar has dissolved.
- Add yogurt and mix well
- Mix flour, salt and baking powder and add to the remaining ingredients and mix into a smooth dough.
- Now fill the waffle cups 2/3 full with the batter (this works best with a teaspoon)
- To prevent the small waffle cups from falling over during baking, place them on a baking tray and bake in the oven for about 10-12 minutes. (To determine if they are baked through, do the toothpick test.)
- Then place them on a cooling rack to cool down.

Decoration of the dinosaur waffle cups
Now our delicious waffle cups become cute dinosaurs
- In the first step, you melt the melts and place the waffle cups upside down with the opening first into the liquid glaze so that the entire opening of the waffle cup is covered with the melts.
- Then fix three triangle chocolate pearls as “dinosaur spikes” in the middle of the waffle cup, sprinkle some green sprinkles over the waffle cup and fix two sugar eyes and a green chocolate ball as a nose on the dinosaur’s face.
And now the little waffle cups have mutated into cute dino waffle cups 😉

If you and your kids are now in the mood for a little dinosaur party snack, my kids and I wish you lots of fun baking and decorating!
Yours, Lia
