Would you like a delicious surprise? Yes? Then our piñata muffins are just the right thing for you! The treats are filled with a very special surprise for kids! In keeping with Carnival, today I'm sharing with you a delicious & brightly colored recipe for the 5th season of the year together with great food bloggers!
Helau & Alaaf! Two words that belong in one time, but definitely not in one sentence! 😉 Unless there is a brightly colored carnival recipe collection from many food bloggers for all carnival lovers! Just like the one we're taking part in today! My blogger colleagues and I also teamed up for the 5th season (do you remember our Halloween and Christmas Blogparades) & created delicious, colorful recipes for you to sweeten the carnival season for your kids and you!
My kids & I are big carnival fans and have baked lots of carnival treats over the last few years and today we have something very special for your kids & you: muffins with a delicious surprise – piñata muffins! Not only do they look great, the surprise inside the piñata muffins brings great joy to both the little bakers and those who are surprised! My kids found it super exciting to fill the muffins and see how the unsuspecting gourmets reacted to the surprise!

Our recipe for piñata muffins
This delicious muffin recipe consists of simple vanilla muffins, delicious cake decoration and a colorful surprise!
Cutting out the hollows for the “surprise” is still challenging for small children, so your help will definitely be needed. I would let school children try it out for themselves. As always, you know your child best… 😉

Preparation
We bake fluffy muffins
- First, set the oven to 175°C top/bottom heat and preheat it well.
- In the next step, you and your minis prepare the muffin tin by filling it with the paper cases.
- Now all the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, sugar & vanilla sugar) are weighed out, placed in the mixing bowl and briefly mixed with a spoon.
- Next, add the wet ingredients (margarine, milk and eggs) and mix all the ingredients well with a hand mixer.
- The batter is then distributed evenly between the muffin cavities (an ice cream scoop can be helpful here, but a normal tablespoon also works 😉).
- Now the muffins are baked for about 20 minutes at 175°C top/bottom heat. To test the cooking, you should do the “stick test” after about 15 minutes. Because every oven bakes differently!
- Once the muffins are baked, place them on a cooling rack to cool.
Our muffins become piñata muffins
- So that you can turn the muffins into piñata muffins, use the large opening of a piping nozzle (at the back) to make a hollow about 1.5-2 cm deep in the middle of all the muffins. (Attention: Please keep the piece of the muffin that you drill out; it will later be put back on the muffin as a "lid" so that the filled cavity can be closed again!) If you don't have a piping nozzle at hand, you can also use a sharp one Use a kitchen knife to cut a cone-shaped depression into the muffin (see instructions in pictures).
- Next, you and your kids fill the cavity with the Smarties and close the filled cavity with the cake lid that was previously removed. Now the muffin piñata is filled!
- In the next step, melt the ruby chocolate in a water bath and spread the liquid chocolate on the piñata muffins. Use the liquid chocolate to secure the cake lid onto the muffin.
- You and your minis can now decorate the piñata muffins as you wish. We used a crunchy bead and pastel colored sugar sprinkles for decoration.
