Who doesn’t know him – the notorious chief robber Hotzenplotz? On the occasion of his 60th birthday, there is now a special cooking and baking book with savory and sweet recipes for little robbers and Robber Hotzenplotz fans!
Today I'm introducing you and your little ones to the cookbook and baking book, and showing you our delicious baking results (of course, we had to try a cake recipe right away!). Then I'll tell you what I loved about this children's baking book.
The Cooking and Baking Book for Little Robbers
The Big Robber Hotzenplotz Cooking and Baking Book* is a recipe collection packed with fun robber-style ideas for kids. Published by Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag, it combines hearty meals, sweet treats, and even picnic & party snack ideas.
The playful cover already sets the mood for a cooking adventure with Robber Hotzenplotz. Funny illustrations by Thorsten Saleina accompany children through the entire book.
Before diving into the recipes, young bakers are introduced to the “1×1 of the Robber’s Kitchen.” With easy explanations, safety rules, and illustrated tips, children are guided step by step and well-prepared for cooking and baking.
Once the foundation is laid, you'll find a colorful potpourri of savory and sweet recipes, as well as picnic and party snack ideas for little rascals.
Each recipe comes with a short ingredient list, preparation time, clear instructions, and colorful illustrations to make it even easier for kids to follow. Of course, every dish is also shown with a tempting photo so children know what their delicious creation will look like when finished.
The recipes by Pia Deges come alive thanks to the witty, colorful illustrations by Thorsten Saleina (based on motifs by F.J. Tripp) and appetizing photos by Michael Ruder.

A Birthday Cake for Robber Hotzenplotz
After exploring the book, we just had to try one of the recipes right away! And since the famous robber turned 60, of course, we baked him a birthday cake – the Robber Hotzenplotz Cake with his iconic robber’s hat!
For this special occasion, my minis decorated the robber’s hat “a little” differently… Our version came out colorful and festive: a pink party hat with ruby chocolate and sugar pearls. After all, birthdays call for fun decorations, no matter what! 🎉
Our conclusion
My minis had so much fun baking – and even more fun decorating! The sheet cake tasted wonderful, and the playful party hat was definitely a highlight.
The cookbook is designed for baking and cooking together with kids . Some steps require adult help (for example, there is no ready-made stencil for cutting the robber’s hat cake from the sheet cake – but we managed it perfectly as a team!). How much help your minis will need depends, of course, on their age and skills. What I really liked ist the “1×1 of the Robber’s Kitchen”. It prepares children with important safety rules, tips, and kitchen basics.
The ingredient lists are easy to understand, and the instructions are clear and understandable. I'm thrilled by the creativity and story behind the recipes! They're a perfect fit for the robber captain and the little "robber" chefs! Fans of Robber Hotzenplotz will definitely find themselves in the characters of the well-known story.
I also really liked the fun illustrations in the book! Personally, I always think it's great when the cookbook/baking book includes photos of the recipes being cooked or baked, which we can use as a guide.
All in all, a fantastic baking and cooking book for children! We'll definitely be trying more recipes from Räuber Hotzenplotz's cookbook!
