Today, my little ones and I are baking a chocolate hazelnut marble cake for Dad's birthday. To make it a real eye-catcher, we're transforming it into a wonderful chocolate dream!
Is there anything more delicious than a moist sponge cake? These cakes are a hot commodity in our family – and cookies are always a hit! 😉 Today we're baking a birthday cake for the little ones' dad. And since he also loves chocolate, he's getting a unique chocolate dream! You and your little ones can, of course, decorate the chocolate hazelnut marble cake however you like. But we're going to introduce you to our special chocolate dream version here, because it looks so beautiful and tastes soooo delicious! 😉
Recipe for our chocolate hazelnut marble cake
The recipe is very easy to bake. The chocolate hazelnut marble cake is a cake that your kids can easily bake on their own, even if they have a little baking experience. And the delicious treat afterwards is worth all the effort!

Ingredients for a 26 springform pan with tube base
Sponge dough
- 375 g margarine
- 6 eggs
- 280 g sugar
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar (15g)
- 375 g (spelled) flour
- 1 packet of baking powder (15 g)
- 200 g ground hazelnuts
- 100 g grated dark chocolate
- 125 ml milk
- 20 g baking cocoa
- 3 tablespoons of breadcrumbs and 5-10 g of margarine to grease the baking pan
Decoration
- 150 g dark chocolate
- white chocolate shavings
- Caramel Fudge Cubes
- "Knusper Flocken" by Zetti*
- chocolate balls
- Toffifee*
- white chocolate crunch balls (we used Crunchies from Choco Moment)*
For the chocolate decoration, you can use anything chocolatey and delicious. You can also cut up chocolate bars and use them as decorations, such as chocolate balls, Rocher, chocolate bonbons, or Kinderbueno. I think it's especially nice to use different colored chocolate, so everything isn't exactly the same color. Here I have collected some delicious chocolate decorations for you.*
Baking accessories
Kitchen scales, measuring jug, mixing bowl, hand mixer, 26 cm springform pan with a tube base (a hole in the middle, but you can also use a flat base if you don't have a tube base), sharp knife, dough scraper, saucepan and bowl for a double boiler, pastry brush, cooling rack

Preparation
Before we can decorate the marble cake with wonderful chocolate, we first have to bake it:
We bake a chocolate hazelnut marble cake.
- First, grease the springform pan. To do this, add margarine and spread it evenly with a pastry brush. Then, rotate the pan to distribute the breadcrumbs evenly (see image) and preheat the oven to 175°C (top/bottom heat).
- Beat margarine, sugar & vanilla sugar until fluffy and the sugar has dissolved.
- Add eggs one at a time and stir for 20 seconds each.
- In the next step, add flour and baking powder to the dough and mix well.
- Now add the ground hazelnuts, chocolate shavings and milk and mix to form a smooth dough.
- Pour half of the batter into the prepared springform pan.
- Mix the remaining half of the dough in the mixing bowl with the cocoa powder to create a dark chocolate dough.
- You also put the dough into the baking tin and use a fork to pull large loops through the dough, from the top to the bottom of the baking tin, so that the marble effect is created inside the cake.
- Now place the marble cake on the middle shelf of the preheated oven.
- Let the cake bake for about 45-50 minutes. Don’t forget to use a skewer to check if it is cooked, because all ovens bake differently (I once had to bake this cake for 60 minutes in another oven until it was baked through…).
- Once the chocolate hazelnut marble cake is fully baked, let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes and then remove it from the pan. To do this, run a sharp knife between the cake and the edge of the pan to loosen the cake from the springform pan. Then open the springform pan and remove it from the cake. Now place the cooling rack on top of the cake and turn it over so that the bottom of the springform pan is on top of the cake. You can now slowly remove the cooling rack from the cake, allowing the chocolate hazelnut marble cake to cool completely.
The chocolate hazelnut marble cake becomes a chocolate dream
- While the cake is cooling, you and your minis melt the dark chocolate in a water bath.
- Then the visible surface and sides of the chocolate hazelnut marble cake are covered with dark chocolate.
- Before the chocolate has dried, you and your little ones can decorate it with all kinds of delicious treats. We decorated the small sprinkles first and then added the larger accents.
And there you have it, the chocolate hazelnut marble cake, transformed into a chocolate dream. A moist, chocolatey treat!

This chocolate dream is a dream of a birthday cake! Just a few candles, and it doesn't need any more decoration! But even without the chocolate decoration, the chocolate hazelnut marble cake is a delicious cake for any coffee date!
My minis and I wish you and your minis lots of fun baking and, of course, even more enjoyment eating them together!
Yours, Lia
