Discover our sweet recipe for mushroom cookies – the perfect fall cookies to bake with kids! Delicious hazelnut chocolate cookies that are creative, cozy, and easy to make.

Fall Cookies with Kids – A Must on Our Fall Bucket List

On our fall bucket list for an unforgettable autumn, my minis and I wanted to bake some delicious fall cookies together! Now that fall break has started, it’s the perfect time to check this one off our list.

After a little brainstorming, we instantly had an idea:
A fall without mushrooms? Not in our home!
That’s how our plan to bake mushroom cookies was born!

Why You Should Bake These Mushroom Cookies with Your Kids

  • Fun for kids – Little hands love shaping these cookies!
  • Creative & colorful – Mushrooms come in all kinds of shapes and shades.
  • Delicious – The combination of hazelnuts and chocolate glaze is simply divine.
  • Perfectly autumnal – They look so cozy and festive on any cookie plate.
  • Family time – A sweet, shared experience full of joy (and chocolate!).

Recipe for Our Delicious Mushroom Cookies

This easy cookie recipe is perfect for baking with kids in fall. Cookies aren’t just for Christmas – little ones love them all year long!

When making cookies with kids, always make sure the dough stays well-chilled and firm. A slightly stiff dough gives the best results. Take out small portions from the fridge as you go to keep it cool and easy to shape.

Ingredients

Cookie doughfor about 50 Mushroom Cookies

  • 250 g butter
  • 100g powdered sugar
  • 300 g flour
  • 150 g ground hazelnuts
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar (15g)
  • 2 egg yolks

Decoration

Mini-Tip We used couverture because it dries faster than regular chocolate – this helps the mushroom caps stick firmly to their stems. Of course, you can also decorate your cookies with red, brown, or orange candy melts and add fall-colored sprinkles for extra fun. Just like real mushrooms, no two of your cookie mushrooms have to look the same!

Baking accessories

Kitchen scale, mixing bowl, knife, cooling rack, saucepan and heatproof bowl for melting chocolate, parchment paper

Preparation

Make the Cookie Dough

  • Weigh or measure all ingredients and knead them together in a mixing bowl until you have a smooth dough. Chill for at least 30–60 minutes. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour.

Mini-Tip Keep the dough cold at all times! If it warms up too much, it will lose its shape while baking. You can even place the shaped cookies back in the fridge for 10–15 minutes before baking.

Shape the Mushroom Cookies

  • For the “mushroom caps”: Roll small balls of dough (a bit smaller than ping pong balls). Cut them in half with a knife. Press a small indentation into the flat side with your finger – this will help attach the stem later. Place the half-balls flat side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • For the “stems”: Roll small dough ropes with your hands, cut them into 2 cm (¾ inch) pieces, and place them on the baking sheet as well.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 175°C (350°F) for 15–17 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Then transfer to a cooling rack and let cool completely.

Note: We tested this recipe twice. The first time, we tried attaching the stems before baking – big mistake! The stems tipped over in the oven. So definitely attach them after baking.

Decorate the Mushroom Cookies

  • While the cookies cool, melt the couverture in a water bath.
  • Dip one end of a cookie stem into the melted chocolate and carefully press it into the indentation of the mushroom cap. Repeat with all cookies.
  • Once dry, dip the caps in chocolate and sprinkle with white or colorful sprinkles if desired. Let the chocolate set completely — and your adorable mushroom cookies are ready!
