No-bake birthday cake, is that possible? Well, logo! This train cake is an absolute hit for kids. Today I'll show you how to make it - without the stress of baking!
Your child wants a cool birthday cake? I have a great idea for a very special birthday cake! A SUPER COOL train cake! An absolute blast: it's a no-bake birthday cake that's ready in no time. How much time you invest is up to you! You can be creative, but you don't have to! Perfect!
Mini tip: The train cake is wonderful for a birthday cake on vacation or when traveling (e.g. in a motorhome) where you may not be able to bake but still want to create something “special”.
The basic structure is very simple: 4 small mini sponge cakes + 16 round cookies for the wheels and a mini chocolate kiss as a driver's cab! You can keep the decoration of the wagons very simple: icing, sugar sprinkles and birthday candles* (here I have put together some great birthday candles for you) – maybe a few passengers (gummy bears) will travel with you.
Or you can get creative!
Of course you can also decorate the train cake wonderfully together with your kids! If there's one thing kids love about baking, it's decorating! The train cake is also a great holiday/weekend activity for kids (I didn't say it was the cleanest activity 😉 ).

Chocolate children's birthday invitation
With our children's birthday banderoles for Ritter Sport Minis you can create a unique invitation for your child's birthday!
A lovingly designed banderole (if necessary with a preconceived invitation text) for parents with little time!
Our animal train cake
We chose an “animal” train for our train cake. Our zoo train transports different animals in each carriage: koalas, birds and a hippopotamus.
You can use all kinds of goodies to decorate your train. In these instructions you will find the ingredients that we used for our “animal” train cake.

Ingredients
Basic ingredients for the railway cake
- 4 small sponge cakes from Dr. Oetker* (locomotive and wagons)
- 1 mini Dickmann’s* (driver's cab locomotive)
- Haribo bag “Colorado”* (Lights locomotive & chimney locomotive)
- 16 soft cakes (round cookies)* (Wheels)
- Smarties* (Lights & Wheels)
- colorful sugar writing* (Wheels)
- edible glue* & chocolate icing* for gluing
Mini-Tip If you don't want to use a ready-made cake for your train cake, you can of course also bake the small sponge cakes yourself. For this you either use the Baking pan for mini loaf cakes* or bake your favorite sponge cake in a springform pan and then cut the cake into small rectangles.
Decoration for the individual wagons
- Mikado cookies* (cage and railway tracks)
- Koala cookies*
- green edible paper strips* (Straw)
- yellow M&M’s* (Chick)
- Hitschler chewy sweets* (hippopotamus pool)
- 1 Kinder Happy Hippo* (Hippopotamus)

Preparation
The train cake consists of your locomotive and three decorated wagons. The cake decoration is attached to the sponge cake using either edible food glue or liquid chocolate.
- Before starting with the individual wagons, the wheels are decorated. To do this, draw “spokes” on the round cookies with sugar writing and place a Smarti on the interface of the “spokes”/the middle.
- Now let's turn our attention to locomotive. Here you glue four decorated, round cookies to the long sides of the sponge cake. (This step is the same for all wagons!) Then place a mini chocolate kiss as a cab at the end of a sponge cake. For the chimney and the headlights, use the Haribo “Colorado” bag. Two raspberries are the headlights and a coated licorice serves as a chimney.
- For the Koala wagon you first attach the wheels, then you fix Smartis as lights. Next, place Mikado cookies as a cage on the edge of the sponge cake and place two Koala cookies in the middle of the sticks.
- To the bird wagon you also attach the wheels and lights first. The green edible paper strips are then stuck onto the wagon. Next, three M&M’s are placed on the edible paper as birds. You can draw eyes and beaks on this with sugar writing.
- The Hippo wagon is probably the easiest! First, glue the wheels and lights back on. Then fix the Children's Happy Hippo in the middle of the sponge cake and decorate blue Hitschler chewy sweets (or blue sprinkles/Smartis) as water in front of and behind the hippopotamus.
And the “animal” train cake is ready!
