Sweet muffins with a hidden message—or even a baked-in gift voucher—are probably one of the most personal homemade Valentine's Day gifts you can give someone you love.
This Valentine's Day, my Minis and I want to surprise the Spaniard with something especially sweet: we're baking muffins! But not just any muffins—we're making Message Muffins filled with little love notes!
As everyone knows, the way to someone's heart is through their stomach, so it's the perfect excuse for the three of us to grab our mixing bowls and bake something delicious once again. My girls quickly decided that we simply had to use our heart-shaped muffin molds for this Valentine's baking project. If it were up to my Minis, we'd bake nothing but hearts in every size and flavor imaginable. For Valentine's Day, that's a pretty fitting choice! 😉
Little Muffins with a Big Surprise: Message Muffins
If you're thinking that the Spaniard probably won't be too surprised to receive muffins for Valentine's Day from the Backen mit Minis household, you're probably right. That's why we came up with something extra special for our homemade Valentine's gift: we're baking little messages right inside the muffins—delicious and PERSONAL Valentine's gifts from the kitchen!
My Minis draw colorful little pictures while I write loving messages to go with them, and just like that, our little "muffin messages" are ready.
Mini Tip: You can also hide handwritten gift vouchers or other small heat-resistant items inside the muffins.
If we're being honest, a delicious muffin is actually the perfect gift wrapping—it's sustainable, tasty, and a wonderful surprise. After all, who expects to find a secret message hidden inside a cake?
Important! Because of that, make sure you keep an eye on the recipient while they're eating the muffin—or warn them beforehand! We certainly don't want anyone choking on your sweet surprise! 😉
Instructions for the Message Muffins
This adorable homemade gift is perfect for making together with your children. Your little ones can create the hidden messages all by themselves—even several days before baking the muffins. That way, you can spread the project over several days, which is usually much easier for little attention spans.
What You'll Need
- A muffin batter of your choice (we used our banana Monkey Muffin, but any simple muffin batter will work))
- A muffin tin and, if desired, paper liners (I used a heart-shaped silicone baking mold*)* verwendet
- Paper for your messages (thin cardstock or regular writing paper both work well. The important thing is that you can fold the message into a small square of about 1 x 1 cm. I recommend using paper no larger than 5 x 5 cm, otherwise the folded message will become too bulky to hide inside the batter.)
- Pens
- Aluminum foil
- And, of course, an oven

How to Make Them
First, get creative with your little paper notes. Write loving messages, draw pictures, add inspiring quotes, or create a little gift voucher. (Photos are unfortunately not a good idea—they won't survive the heat of the oven.) This is the perfect opportunity for you and your Minis to let your creativity shine.
Next, fold each message down to approximately 1 x 1 cm and wrap it securely in aluminum foil. The foil protects your message from the batter, allowing the cake to bake around the foil instead of sticking to your carefully designed note. Wrap each message in foil two or three times to make sure no batter can seep inside. This way, your message will still be perfectly readable after baking.
Now bake your muffins as usual with your children. Before placing them in the oven, simply press one little foil packet into the center of each muffin. Push each packet down far enough so it's completely covered by batter. Then bake the muffins as directed—and let the surprise bake right along with them!
Once your homemade Valentine's treats have cooled, decorate them with sugar pearls, chocolate, or any decorations you like. And just like that, you've created beautiful homemade gifts from the kitchen that are sure to surprise someone special!
