Make a Biene Maja cake yourself with ease: a moist loaf cake with a yellow-and-black look and simple decorations – perfect for a children’s birthday party.
For her 3rd birthday, my little one wished for a Biene Maja party. Even if things aren’t always possible the way we imagine them right now, one thing was clear: there would definitely be a bee-themed party with a matching Biene Maja cake.
I love baking, but I’m definitely not a professional themed-cake baker. Elaborate fondant cakes just aren’t my thing – and yet I still love baking themed cakes for my children’s birthdays. My secret for simple themed cakes? Colorful cake decorations, a clever glaze, and sometimes a simple template.
Today I’ll show you how to conjure up a simple Biene Maja themed cake with little effort and absolutely no professional know-how – one that will make children’s eyes light up.

Recipe for Our Biene Maja Cake
This Biene Maja cake consists of a moist sponge cake and a striking yellow-and-black glaze. The cake is perfect for baking with children, because the little ones can help wonderfully, especially when decorating.
Mini-Tip: use a light-colored sponge cake, e.g. lemon cake, our fruity orange cake recipe, vanilla cake, etc. – this makes the yellow color really stand out.

Preparation – How the Biene Maja Cake Is Made
Today we’re baking a simple themed cake that reflects the “Biene Maja” theme both on the inside and the outside.
A Black-and-Yellow Lemon Soda Cake as the Base
- Before you start with the batter, grease the loaf pan with a little butter and breadcrumbs and preheat the oven to 180°C (top/bottom heat).
- For the all-in batter, first mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, sugar & salt), then add the wet ingredients (lemon soda, oil & eggs). Mix everything with a hand mixer until smooth.
- Now divide the batter evenly between two mixing bowls. Color one half yellow and the other black.
- Next, add about 3 tablespoons of the black batter to the loaf pan and smooth it out. Then add 3 tablespoons of the yellow batter and smooth it as well. Continue layering the two colors until all the batter is used.
- Bake the Biene Maja cake for about 50 minutes until done. Since ovens vary, I recommend doing a skewer test: insert a toothpick or skewer into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is done; if there’s still batter on it, continue baking.
- Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a cooling rack. Only decorate the cake once it has cooled completely.

Turning the Lemon Soda Cake into a Bee Cake
- For decorating the Biene Maja cake, first melt the yellow cake glaze in a water bath and spread it over the entire loaf cake.
- Next, melt the black cake glaze in a water bath and use it to paint black stripes on the yellow cake.
- While the black stripes are still liquid, place the Biene Maja figures and add the yellow sugar pearls and little bees.
- And just like that, the simple Biene Maja themed cake is ready for the birthday party!

Why This Biene Maja Cake Is Perfect for a Children’s Birthday Party
- Simple loaf cake instead of a complicated layer cake
- No fondant required
- Ideal for themed-cake beginners
- Kids can help with decorating
- The figures can be played with even after the party
My little one was absolutely thrilled with her very own Biene Maja cake for her birthday! The Biene Maja figures are played with constantly!
I wish your little ones – and you – lots of fun baking it yourself and even more fun celebrating the children’s birthday party!
Yours, Lia

Hallo,
Delicious greetings,
Lia
