Bake cute fried egg cookies with your children! A simple Easter recipe without cookie cutters – perfect for little bakers and the Easter season.
In one month it’s Easter – the perfect time for a few simple Easter recipes for baking with your children. We especially love baking creative and easy cookies, such as the delicious lemon bunnies and pastel-colored Easter cookies. Of course, a filled yeast braid could not be missing either.
This year we are starting with the super delicious fried egg cookies. The crispy vanilla butter cookies are decorated with a fresh lemon icing and in the end look like little fried eggs. That makes them not only incredibly delicious but also perfect for the Easter brunch, the Easter basket, or as a homemade Easter gift.
Why Fried Egg Cookies Are Perfect for Baking with Kids
These Easter cookies are ideal for baking with children because:
- no cookie cutters are needed
- the dough is easy to shape
- children can decorate the icing themselves
- the recipe is quick and reliable
Even the youngest children can press the fried egg shape with their hands and later add the “egg yolk” with yellow icing.
This quickly creates cute Easter cookies that are guaranteed to bring lots of excitement.

Preparation
- Add the flour, vanilla sugar, butter, salt, vanilla paste and egg to the mixing bowl and knead everything into a smooth dough.
- Then chill the cookie dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
- Before shaping the fried egg cookies, preheat the oven to 175°C (top/bottom heat).
- Next, shape the dough into small balls (about the size of a ping-pong ball) and flatten them into small dough discs. This works well by hand – they will be more even if you roll them out with a rolling pin. To make the discs look slightly irregular, we gently pressed the edges with our fingers. This gives the cookies the uneven shape of real fried eggs.
- Place the cookies on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake them in the oven on the middle rack for about 10–12 minutes. Especially with cookies, you should keep a close eye on them during the last 2–3 minutes, as ovens heat differently and butter cookies can burn or become too dark quickly.
- Once the crispy butter cookies are baked, let them cool for 5 minutes on the baking tray, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
- Now prepare the icing: mix 70 g of powdered sugar with the lemon juice. Add the lemon juice teaspoon by teaspoon, as the icing can quickly become too thin. Once the right consistency is reached, spread the icing over the cooled cookies and allow it to dry well.
- Finally, mix the remaining powdered sugar with 1–2 teaspoons of lemon juice and a little yellow food coloring. We use the drop system from Goodbake and used two drops of yellow food coloring for an intense yellow. The yellow icing is piped into the center of each cookie as the egg yolk using a disposable piping bag. Once the icing has dried, the fried egg cookies are ready to be enjoyed or given away as a beautiful Easter gift.
